Exploring Kanchipuram: My Hometown of Temples, Culture, and Silk

๐ŸŒธ Introduction

Welcome to the first post on Journey to Success! I thought — what better way to start than by sharing the story of the place I proudly call my hometown: Kanchipuram.

Located in the heart of Tamil Nadu, Kanchipuram (also spelled Kancheepuram) is one of the seven sacred cities of India. It’s famous not only for its majestic temples and rich heritage but also for being one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in South India.

๐Ÿ›• A City of Temples

Kanchipuram is often referred to as the "City of Thousand Temples", and for good reason. Every street here tells a story from the past, and every temple wall whispers the chants of centuries.

Some must-visit temples:

  • Ekambareswarar Temple – One of the Pancha Bhoota (five element) Shiva temples representing Earth.

  • Kamakshi Amman Temple – A divine Shakti Peetha and the heart of the city.

  • Varadaraja Perumal Temple – A grand Vishnu temple known for its massive stone lizard sculptures and intricate carvings.

  • Kailasanathar Temple – The oldest temple in Kanchipuram, built by the Pallavas in the 8th century. A masterpiece in stone!

Every temple here is a lesson in architecture, history, and devotion.

๐Ÿ‘˜ The Pride of Kanchipuram: Silk Sarees

Ask anyone in India about Kanchipuram, and they’ll say “Silk Sarees.” Our handwoven Kanchipuram sarees are known across the world for their:

  • Rich zari (gold-thread) work

  • Bold colors

  • Longevity and elegance

Many families here have been weaving sarees for generations. If you visit, I highly recommend touring a weaving village to see how these masterpieces are made — from silk thread to showroom.

๐Ÿซ Education & Learning in a Spiritual City

Beyond temples, Kanchipuram has a strong focus on traditional education. It's a historic seat of learning — in ancient times, it was a center for Vedic studies, Tamil literature, and Jain & Buddhist learning.

Today, Kanchipuram is also home to respected institutions like:

  • Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya (SCSVMV University)

  • Government Arts College

  • Several reputed schools and coaching centers

๐Ÿ›️ What to Do When You Visit

  • Visit temples early in the morning for a peaceful experience

  • Shop for silk sarees in Chinna Kanchipuram

  • Try traditional Tamil vegetarian meals at Saravana Bhavan or local messes

  • Explore the Silk Weaving Units

  • Walk through narrow streets — every corner has a story

๐ŸŒ… Why Kanchipuram Is Special to Me

As someone born and raised in Kanchipuram, I carry the culture, warmth, and spirituality of this city wherever I go. It’s not just a place — it’s a feeling of timeless beauty and sacred energy.

If you're someone who loves history, heritage, or just peaceful destinations, Kanchipuram should be on your travel bucket list.
